Being a Godly Influence on Younger Generations

Written by: Layne McDonald, Ph.D.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6

In today’s fast-paced world, young men are seeking role models who lead with integrity, strength, and unwavering faith. As adults, we have the profound responsibility and privilege of shaping the next generation, helping them navigate the complexities of life with a solid foundation in Christ. The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 22:6 that training children in God’s ways yields lasting results. Our words and actions today have the power to influence their paths tomorrow.

The Need for Mentorship

Research shows that mentorship programs have a profound impact on youth outcomes. According to MENTOR, youth who engage in mentorship are 78% more likely to volunteer, demonstrating increased social responsibility and a sense of purpose. These relationships provide guidance, support, and encouragement—vital elements that help young people thrive in their faith and life.

Tips for Being a Godly Influence

  • Volunteer in Church Youth Ministries or Community Programs
Actively participate in youth ministries, mentorship programs, or community initiatives. By offering your time and wisdom, you become an example of service and love. Your involvement in shaping their spiritual and personal growth is invaluable.

  • Share Your Personal Faith Journey with Honesty and Humility
Vulnerability and authenticity are key. Share the highs and lows of your faith journey, showing them that faith isn’t about perfection but about perseverance and trust in God’s plan. Your testimony can inspire and give hope to a younger generation that may feel lost or uncertain.

  • Be Consistent and Approachable
Kids value consistency. Be someone they can rely on and turn to for advice or comfort. A steady presence offers security and reassurance, and through your example, they will learn the importance of building a life rooted in Christ.

Encouragement for the Journey

As a mentor, your influence extends far beyond the present. You have the power to help shape the spiritual foundation of the next generation. Whether it’s offering guidance in tough times, teaching biblical truths, or simply showing kindness and integrity, every action you take reflects Christ’s love and can impact a young life for years to come.
