Practicing Humility in Leadership

Written by: Layne McDonald, Ph.D.

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” – James 4:10

In a world where leadership is often equated with power, control, and influence, the Bible offers a refreshing perspective on what it means to lead. Jesus Christ, the ultimate example of leadership, taught us that true greatness comes not from elevating oneself but from lowering oneself in service to others. James 4:10 reminds us that when we humble ourselves before God, He is the one who lifts us up. Humility in leadership is not only pleasing to God—it is the foundation for building trust, fostering collaboration, and inspiring others to grow.

The Power of Humility in Leadership

Research shows that teams led by humble leaders report higher levels of trust, communication, and collaboration (Forbes). Humility cultivates an environment where team members feel valued and heard, creating a culture of mutual respect. Humble leaders empower others by recognizing the value in everyone’s contributions, which strengthens the team as a whole.

When we lead with humility, we mirror Christ’s example, who led not from a place of authority but from a place of love and service. Jesus washed His disciples' feet, demonstrating that leadership is about serving others, not elevating oneself.

Tips for Practicing Humility in Leadership

  • Pray for Wisdom
Before making decisions, pray for God’s wisdom. Humble leaders seek God’s guidance rather than relying solely on their own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. Prayer allows us to surrender our pride and invite God’s direction in all we do.

  • Serve Others
Lead by serving. Whether it’s taking on the less glamorous tasks or showing care for those you lead, serving others reflects the heart of Christ. Humble leadership is rooted in a willingness to lift others up and put their needs above your own.

  • Seek Feedback with an Open Heart
Humble leaders actively seek feedback and listen to others with an open heart. No one has all the answers, and the willingness to learn from others not only improves leadership but fosters an environment of trust and growth.

Encouragement for the Journey

True leadership begins with humility before God. It is in the quiet moments of surrender and prayer that we recognize our dependence on Him. When we lead humbly, we allow God to work through us, shaping our hearts and minds to better serve those around us. As you step into leadership roles, remember that your greatest strength comes from your humility and your willingness to serve as Christ did.
