How to Build Lifelong Friendships

Written by: Layne McDonald, Ph.D.

“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17

Friendship is one of God’s most beautiful gifts—a source of strength, encouragement, and growth. Just as iron sharpens iron, true friendships, especially those grounded in faith, sharpen our spirits and our character. We are not meant to walk this journey of life alone; we are called to build deep, lasting relationships that support us in our walk with Christ and help us grow into the men and women God created us to be.

The Value of Godly Friendships

Research consistently shows that having lifelong friendships is not only crucial for our mental and emotional well-being but for our spiritual growth as well. A Harvard study found that individuals with close, supportive friendships report improved mental health, greater happiness, and a deeper sense of purpose. These friendships provide strength during times of struggle, joy in times of celebration, and wisdom in moments of uncertainty. When your friendships are built on a foundation of faith, they become an even more powerful force for growth in all aspects of life.

Tips for Building Lifelong Friendships

  • Join Small Groups to Meet Like-Minded Believers
Finding friendships that strengthen your faith starts with surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals. Small groups are a perfect setting for meeting people who share your beliefs and values. They offer an opportunity to dive deep into Scripture, share struggles and victories, and build bonds that are centered on God’s love and purpose.

  • Be Intentional—Schedule Regular Meetups and Conversations
Building lasting friendships requires intentionality. Make an effort to schedule regular meetups, whether it’s for coffee, a Bible study, or simply a time to connect and talk. Deep friendships take time and effort, so be committed to investing in those relationships.

  • Pray for God to Bring Godly Friends into Your Life
God desires for you to have friends who encourage you in your faith. If you’re feeling lonely or disconnected, pray for God to bring the right people into your life. Trust that He will guide you toward friendships that align with His will and purpose.

Encouragement for the Journey

True friendship does more than just fill the loneliness; it sharpens you, challenges you, and helps you become more like Christ. Just as iron sharpens iron, your friendships can refine your character, deepen your faith, and bring out the best in you. They will be the ones who encourage you to live out your calling, hold you accountable when you stumble, and celebrate God’s work in your life.

God has designed us for community. Building lifelong friendships is not just about finding people to spend time with; it’s about finding people who will walk alongside you, support you in your faith, and help you grow into the person God created you to be.
