LMOS VOID Beta 0.42.0: Universal Open Turns LM Files into an Operating-System Front Door

LM Files now resolves recognized files to the right LM app, creates an editable project from supported source formats, remembers that project for future opens, and lets desktop double-click behave more like an operating system than a download page.

Beta test updateThis article documents what is working now, what it can do for users, and the workflow we want real testers to pressure-test.

What changed

  • LM Files gained one universal file-to-app resolver backed by each app’s declared file types.

  • Desktop double-click routes recognized editable files through LM Files and into their LM creator app.

  • DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, XLS, CSV and TXT can create editable LM Office projects.

  • FDX, Fountain and compatible screenplay text can create editable LM Script projects.

  • The first editable open links the LM Files asset to its LM project; later opens resume that project.

  • The inspector shows Open With candidates and separates editable open from Preview Original.

  • Google Docs, Slides and Sheets are recognized by MIME type even when they have no filename extension.

  • Google-native Drive files may be registered without a conventional byte size.

  • Pages, Keynote, Numbers and legacy Office binary formats are recognized but stay native-fidelity gated.

  • LM Office now declares local-file capability in the same app manifest system used by the rest of LMOS.

The operating-system rule

Recognition is not the same as editability. LMOS may know that a file belongs to an app before that app has earned a safe importer for the format. The UI says so rather than opening a lossy conversion and calling it complete.

What comes next

The same Universal Open contract now becomes the path for photos, audio, design assets, books and production media. Provider-neutral source references come first so those apps can reopen the original from local storage or a connected provider without forcing large source files into LM-managed storage.
